Tests

Why Do We Give Tests?

We give tests to see how each student progresses during the year and from year to year in proficiency to use the German language to communicate both in spoken and in written form. Also, it demonstrates the strengths of each student and identifies any weakness that can be immediately corrected to continue an optimal learning experience.

Which Tests are Given?

All teachers give informal tests as often as needed. They are teacher–generated, and should be a successful experience for the students. It is a review of what has been learned the previous Saturday.

From Level 2 on, there will be two semester tests, also based on the material that has been used in class, to determine how much has been learned and retained.

Students in levels 6 through 9 will take the AATG Tests (Levels 2, 3, and 4), developed by the American Association of German Teacher, as official tests in addition to the semester tests. The AATG tests are scored by the AATG and they measure the level of proficiency in German on levels 2, 3, and 4.

We also have the German Sprachdiplom A2 to introduce our students to a German (and worldwide) examination that demonstrates their ability to use German in spoken and written forms. This test is offered at the end of Level 9.

In preparation for the American college entrance examinations, the SAT II and AP in German, are offered for students at level 10 and can be taken at their high school or at the Watchung Hills Regional High School.

The Sprachdiplom examinations BI and especially CI require a significant amount of effort and maturity, that students hopefully reach in their last two years at our school. The successful candidate of these two tests can look back with pride at a big accomplishment!
